Now that I have children of my own, I find myself always replaying memories of my childhood. I always knew it was a good one, but I never appreciated just how much effort must have gone into things until I started contemplating doing them for my children.
Because we lived miles from anywhere, and had a huge family (my parents fostered children), trick or treating was kind of impossible. So what my parents used to do was dress up the whole house in lots of glowing things and pumpkins, lanterns and candles, cobwebs...you name it. We'd all dress up ourselves, have some seasonal food like pumpkin soup or pumpkin cake, and then all the lights would go out, our house was be transformed into this spooky maze, and we'd go on this treasure hunt for our sweets and chocolate. The spooky twist? Our parents would also be hiding somewhere ready to jump out on us along the way. Somehow regular trick or treating had never managed to measure up to the hours of fun I remember having on Halloween as a young child. I only hope I can make it just as fun this year for my own children :)

Your parents were awesome! I hope you make some great memories this year, Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteEmily, what a neat way for your family to have celebrated! I think that's really such a wonderful, memorable tradition! We didn't do a lot around Halloween--the usual costumes for school, etc. Times as a family are special though, whether around Halloween or other occasions!
